Why sheet sizing goes wrong so often
Mattress manufacturers don't follow one universal rulebook. A "Full" mattress can measure 53 or 54 inches wide, depending on the brand. Depth varies even more between models.
Add a topper or a pillow-top mattress, and your real sleeping surface can sit 2 to 4 inches taller than the mattress alone. A size label alone isn't enough. You need the actual depth number too.

How to measure your mattress for sheets
Skip the guesswork and measure directly. It takes under two minutes.
Width and length. Run a tape measure across the top of the mattress, edge to edge, in both directions.
Depth. Measure straight down the side, from the top surface to the floor. Include any attached pillow-top layer.
Topper thickness. If you use a separate topper, measure it too. Add that number to your mattress depth.
Add the buffer. Add 2 to 3 inches to your total depth. That buffer keeps a fitted sheet from popping off the corners overnight.
Fitted vs. flat vs. deep-pocket sheets
A fitted sheet has elastic edges and wraps around the mattress. A flat sheet lies loose on top, between you and any blanket or duvet. Most sheet sets include both, plus one or two pillowcases.
Pocket depth is where sizing breaks down for most shoppers. Standard sheets fit mattresses up to about 12–14 inches deep. Deep-pocket sheets stretch to roughly 15–17 inches. Extra-deep or "split king" styles go up to 18 inches or more.
If your mattress plus topper exceeds 14 inches, standard sheets will ride up and slip off within a night or two. Check the pocket depth on the packaging, not just the size name.
What if your mattress is a non-standard size?
RVs, daybeds, adjustable bases, and older homes often use mattresses that don't match any standard chart. A short-queen RV mattress, for example, is typically 60 × 75 inches. That's four inches shorter than a residential queen.
